英語学習の指標としてよく聞くCEFR（Common European Framework of Reference for Languages／ヨーロッパ言語共通参照枠）。

CEFRは、世界で認められている英語の国際基準です。読む、聞く、書く、話すの4技能を「A1」から「C2」までの6段階で評価します。A1が基礎、C2が最高レベルです。CEFRの特徴は、そのレベルで何ができるか、を示した基準だということです

今回は、レベルごとの具体的な能力の目安を紹介します。レベルの違いがよくわかるように、同じトピックで文章の例を二つ作成してみました。一つ目は、自己紹介。2つ目は、ペンギンについての説明文です。

レベルの違いを確認して、自分が目指す地点を明確にしていきましょう。

まず、CEFRと他試験のスコア・レベル対応表です。

次に、CEFRのレベルの単語例です。これを見ると、明らかに単語の難易度が変わりますね。

では、次からレベルごとに例文を交えて、レベルを見ていきます。

A1レベル（基礎段階の初級者）

できること：ごく基本的な日常表現や自己紹介ができる。簡単な挨拶や数字、簡単な単語を理解可能。
時間の目安：約75時間の学習で到達可能。
資格試験の目安：英検5級。

A1レベルの例①（自己紹介）：
Hello! My name is Tom. I live in a big city. I like cats and dogs. Every day, I go to school. School is fun.

A1レベルの例②（ペンギンについて）：
Penguins are birds. They live in cold places. Penguins cannot fly. They swim in the sea. Penguins like fish.

非常に短く簡単な文で、基本的な情報を伝えています。
使用されている単語やフレーズは非常に基本的で、日常的な話題に限定されています。
文法も簡単で、一文一文が短く、理解しやすい構成になっています。

A2レベル（基礎段階の拡張）

できること：日常生活の簡単な会話、買い物や道案内などができる。
時間の目安：約150時間の学習。
資格試験の目安：英検4級、共通テスト基礎レベルに相当。

A2レベルの例①（自己紹介）：
Hello! My name is Tom. I live in a big city with my family. I like cats and dogs very much. Every day, I go to school by bus. I study English and Math. School is fun and I have good friends.

A2レベルの例②（ペンギンについて）：
Penguins are birds that live in cold places like Antarctica. They cannot fly, but they are good swimmers. Penguins eat fish and other small animals in the sea. They have black and white feathers. Penguins live in groups.

短く、簡単な文で身近な話題を説明しており、基本的な情報交換や理解が可能なレベルです。
使われている文法は比較的単純で、頻繁に使う表現を中心に構成されています。
内容は日常生活や環境についての簡単な説明に限定されており、A2レベルで求められる「親しみやすく、直接的な表現」ができています。

B1レベル（自立した言語使用者の初級）

できること：海外旅行や基本的な仕事の場面で十分なコミュニケーションが可能。過去の経験や将来の計画についても話せる。
時間の目安：約200時間の学習。
資格試験の目安：英検2級、共通テスト標準レベル、TOEFL iBT約42〜71点。

B1レベルの例①（自己紹介）：
Hello! My name is Tom, and I live in a big city with my family. I really like pets, especially cats and dogs. Every day, I take the bus to school where I study various subjects like English and Math. I enjoy school because I have many good friends and interesting lessons. Sometimes after school, I play soccer with my classmates.

B1レベルの例②（ペンギンについて）：
Penguins are birds that live mainly in Antarctica and other cold regions. Unlike many birds, they cannot fly but are excellent swimmers, using their wings to move through the water. Penguins mainly eat fish and krill, which they catch while swimming. Their black and white feathers help them hide from predators in the water. Penguins also live in large groups called colonies, which helps protect them from harsh weather and enemies.

主なポイントの理解：ペンギンの生息地や特徴など、馴染みのある話題について明確で簡単な説明を提供しており、B1レベルの「身近な話題を理解し説明できる」能力を示しています。
簡潔で論理的な構成：各文がはっきりとした情報を伝えており、流れも自然であるため、B1レベルで求められる「シンプルでつながった文章の作成」ができています。
理由や背景の簡単な説明：ペンギンの羽の色が捕食者から身を守る役割を持つといった理由付けも含まれており、これはB1レベルでの「意見や理由の簡単な説明」に該当します。

B2レベル（自立した言語使用者の中級）

できること：専門的な話題や抽象的な内容について議論でき、明確な意見表明が可能。
時間の目安：約300時間の学習。
資格試験の目安：英検準1級、TOEFL約72〜94点。

B2レベルの例①（自己紹介）：
Hello! My name is Tom, and I live in a large city with my family. I have a great interest in animals, especially cats and dogs, because they are friendly and fun to be with. I usually take the bus to school every morning, where I study subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science. I find school enjoyable not only because of the interesting lessons but also because I can spend time with my friends. In my free time, I often play soccer with classmates, which helps me relax and stay healthy.

B2レベルの例②（ペンギンについて）：
Penguins are a unique group of flightless birds primarily found in Antarctica and surrounding cold regions. Despite their inability to fly, penguins are highly adapted to aquatic life, using their flipper-like wings to swim swiftly underwater in search of fish, squid, and krill. Their distinctive black and white plumage serves as camouflage, helping them avoid predators by blending in with the ocean from above and below. Living in large colonies allows penguins to share warmth and protect themselves from predators and the harsh environment. These social behaviors, combined with their physical adaptations, make penguins fascinating creatures well-suited to extreme conditions.

内容が詳細で多様な情報を含み、ペンギンの生態や適応、社会的行動まで含めて説明しています。
複雑な文構造や専門的な語彙が使われており、読者に明確で説得力のある情報を提供しています。
論理的な展開があり、因果関係や比較的抽象的な概念も説明できているため、B2レベルの「詳細な説明や議論ができる」能力を示しています。

C1レベル（熟達した言語使用者の初級）

できること：複雑で高度な内容を理解し、説得力を持って論じることが可能。ビジネスや学術的な場で広く通用。
例文レベル：高度な議論や論文作成も行える。
時間の目安：約400時間の学習。
資格試験の目安：英検1級、TOEFL95点以上。

C1レベルの例①（自己紹介）：
Hello! My name is Tom, and I live in a vibrant metropolitan city with my family. I have always been deeply fascinated by the animal kingdom, especially domestic pets like cats and dogs, because of their affectionate and playful nature. Every morning, I take the bus to school, where I engage in comprehensive studies including English, Mathematics, and Science. I genuinely enjoy my school life, not only due to the intellectually stimulating lessons but also because of the meaningful social interactions with my friends. In my leisure time, I am passionate about playing soccer with my classmates, which not only serves as a great way to unwind but also helps me maintain my physical fitness and teamwork skills..

C1レベルの例②（ペンギンについて）：
Penguins are fascinating flightless birds that predominantly inhabit the Southern Hemisphere, especially Antarctica. Unlike most birds, penguins have adapted to aquatic life with their wings evolving into flippers, enabling them to swim with remarkable agility to catch fish, squid, and krill. Their distinctive black and white plumage serves as an effective camouflage against predators, blending with the ocean when viewed from above or below. Penguins live in large colonies that provide protection against predators and harsh environmental conditions. Their social behaviors are complex and include vocal communication, cooperative hunting, and nurturing their young with great care.

複雑で詳細な情報を明確かつ流暢に提供し、専門的な語彙を豊富に使っています。
文章構造が論理的で一貫性があり、理由や例を挙げて説得力ある説明がされている点が特徴です。
社会的・学術的な文脈に適した表現を自在に使い分け、文体や語彙の幅広さによって読者を引きつける力があります。
全体として、C1レベルの「高度で洗練された文章作成能力」を示しており、自然で説得力のある専門的な説明です。

まずはめざしたい CEFR B1レベル

いかがでしょうか？

「C1」ともなると文章も洗練され、使っている単語も専門的で難解なものになりますね。C1は、高度な表現が自在で、熟達した言語使用者とも言えます。もちろん、このような英語を書いたり、話したりできれば言うことはないのですが、このレベルを目指すのはかなりハードルが高くなります。

なので、まず、「B1」レベルをさしあたっての目標と定めたいですね。B1は中級レベルの最初にあたり、社会生活で対応可能が可能なレベルです。

ブリティッシュカウンシルのサイトでは、以下のように定義されています。

B1レベル（自立した言語使用者）
仕事、学校、娯楽などで普段出会うような身近な話題について、標準的な話し方であれば、主要な点を理解できる。その言葉が話されている地域にいるときに起こりそうな、たいていの事態に対処することができる。身近な話題や個人的に関心のある話題について、筋の通った簡単な文章を作ることができる。

つまり、CEFRのB1レベルは、英語での日常的なコミュニケーションの基盤となる重要な段階です。海外旅行や留学、仕事の場面で自力で対処できる力を獲得でき、学習の大きな節目となります。

また、B1は、英検だと2級が目安となりますが、何より、大学の共通テストがB1レベルということが特筆すべきポイントです。中高校生にとっては、最低限目指すべきレベル、ということになります。
